The Spark Behind The Padette by Padded Waltz
The inspiration for The Padette came from a recurring issue during our live shows: no matter how tight the sound setup, our lyrics often got lost in the mix. People would tell us they loved our sound, but they couldn't always make out the words. This was frustrating because the stories behind our songs are so important to us, and we wanted our audience to fully understand and connect with them. That's why we created The Padette: a physical songbook that our audience could follow along with during shows, much like subtitles in a movie. It ensures that even if the sound isn't perfect, the lyrics—and the meaning behind them—can still be clearly heard and appreciated. It reminds us of bands like Thom Yorke's projects, where his voice can be hard to understand at first, but once you read the lyrics, you always hear them clearly, making the music more immersive and meaningful.
From Concept to Creation
Once the concept of The Padette took shape, it quickly evolved into something much more than just a lyric booklet. Within three days, the project went from a fleeting idea to a fully realized creation. We wanted The Padette to be an extension of Padded Waltz itself—a multi-faceted companion for our audience. It features not only our lyrics but also deeper explanations of the songs, quirky ideas, and even a platform to promote our other projects, such as Descant Music, our music school in Holyoke, and Mass Music Collective, which connects local bands with audiences through Spotify playlists.
If you've followed Padded Waltz, you know we aren't afraid to be silly—even downright stupid. The Padette became the perfect outlet for some of our more playful, whimsical ideas. THUMB BUDDY and BRUSSEL SPRITZ, two fake "Padded Waltz Products," found their home here. These were inside jokes that turned into visual gags, delightful little Easter eggs for our fans to enjoy.
In essence, The Padette serves multiple purposes: a lyric book, a zine of creative curiosities, and a bridge between all our creative worlds. It's a tangible piece of everything we do—our music, humor, and projects—all wrapped up into something our fans can hold in their hands, offering a deeper insight into our journey and an intimate connection to our art.
A huge shout-out to Copy Cat Print Shop in West Springfield for helping bring our vision to life—they absolutely nailed it. The quality is immaculate, and everyone who has seen The Padette has commented on how well it turned out. We wholeheartedly recommend them for anyone looking to turn their creative ideas into something tangible and beautiful.
Experiencing The Padette
The Padette was designed to be more than just a booklet; it's an experience meant to enrich our live shows and deepen the connection between the audience and our music. We wanted it to act as a guide—offering clarity and context when the live sound might not capture every word. Beyond the shows, The Padette also serves as a personal keepsake, inviting fans to revisit the meaning behind our songs and discover new layers long after the lights go down. It's about transforming our music into something you can engage with both in the moment and in your own time.
A Legacy That Endures
For me, The Padette represents something lasting. I love the idea of someone in the distant future stumbling upon a copy and getting a glimpse into what Padded Waltz was all about. Even if music isn’t played on Spotify centuries from now, The Padette might still be sitting on a dusty shelf somewhere, waiting to be discovered. It’s a time capsule of our creativity, something tangible that outlasts the digital age.
Music has a long shelf life—whether it’s on vinyl, streaming platforms, or tucked away in an old publication like The Padette. Our goal is that, by having these different formats, our work can continue to reach people in unexpected ways. It’s not about ego, but about the joy of knowing that our creativity might still find a home with someone, someday.
The Future of The Padette
As long as we’re creating music, The Padette will continue to evolve. Volume 3 is already in development, featuring newer songs from our upcoming album. We're also working on specialized editions, like one dedicated to our sci-fi project First Spaceship on Venus. While The Padette might seem like a side project, it’s an important part of how we extend the reach of Padded Waltz, giving our creativity another way to connect with people.
